LABELING, THE WINE’S LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Fecha

The first contact we have with a wine is through its label and back label, which gathers a large amount of very varied information, like a letter of introduction, as in the case of Ferratus wines.

With this information, we can know more or less what the wine is going to be like before tasting it: a reference of its quality, its elaboration process or its origin.

Increasingly, wine labels offer us more and more information about the characteristics of the origin and production of the wine, legal data, descriptive aspects or advice for use; much of this is mandatory to meet the legal requirements of sale. Meanwhile, other labels offer more information about the wine’s personality.

The label must state:

Mandatory data:

Name of the product or trademark, it is the name under which the wine is sold. In addition to being legal information, it serves as a reference to know its quality.

Producer, the name of the producing and/or bottling company must appear on the label. The prestige or name of the company can serve as a guide or reference and guarantee, as in our case.

Origin of the grape and place of elaboration of the wine, in the label we also find information about the country of origin of the grape. This information can give us clues about the region of origin and qualities of the wine.

Denomination of Origin, if the wine is part of any Denomination of Origin, it must also appear on the label, together with the seal of the Regulatory Council of the corresponding Denomination of Origin. With this, we will have more information about its characteristics according to the requirements imposed by each Regulatory Council: type of grape, percentage of each variety…

Vintage, is the year in which the grapes were harvested in the winemaking process. It is a determining value in terms of the quality of a wine depending on the weather, production conditions… With this data, we will know the optimum time for consumption.

Volume of alcohol, the label also shows the alcohol content, as a total percentage. With this information we can know the body of the wine, the higher the alcohol content, the more body.

Batch number: Information on the tracking and traceability of the products, for health control purposes.

Presence of sulfites, if there is a concentration equal to or greater than 10 milligrams per liter, it must be reflected on the labels.

Bottle capacity, the most common measure is 75 cl.

– Other information:

Aging, it will provide us with information on the time and aging process to which it has been subjected. Expressed in terms of Crianza, Reserva or Gran Reserva.

Grape variety, the label will show if it is a single variety wine or if different varieties have been used. With the characteristics of each variety we will be able to know its acidity, color, sweetness?

Serving and pairing recommendations, these indications from the producer can be fundamental when deciding on one wine or another. Suggestions, ideal temperature and special information within a QR code.
